Its only been two weeks and my enthusiasm for getting back to studies has fizzled out like a limp fart that dies in a squeak. Anyway, there were interesting moments, but obviously, they were not related to my core modules. Instead, it came from the past- history!
History is such a fascinating subject that I cannot find the words to describe it. It represents so many things; mystery, the rise and fall of great powers, how our world today came to be, and how it is being used today.
Mystery; So much of history is still unknown. For example, Singapore has a history of over a thousand years, but we only know less than 1/5 of it. Much of the remaining 4/5 is based on educated guesses, but even those have to be revised with each piece of archaeological evidence that is found. Sadly, archeology is not supported by govt, and with each building that is being erected, another chance to discover our past is lost forever.
I am also mesmerised in the 'What Ifs' of history. In the 15th Century, the Chinese were already smelting iron ore and using methane as a fuel, some 400 years before the Europeans. What if the Chinese had had an Industrial Revolution then? The world today sure would be different. This then leads to the 'Why', because it didnt happen, and my guess is due to the different ways European and Asian are oriented. This leads to another why, the answer which I havent the foggiest idea to.
History may be something that has already occurred, but history as it is told can be something totally different. (In some cases, what is not told) It is a tool that is used by those in power, to keep in power, be it for religious or political purposes.
Fascinating, isnt it? lol

The Chinese also discovered gunpowder before anyone else in the world.
Think of a million-strong army armed with rifles and willing to put their life down for a communist regime...

The Chinese also invented the compass, paper, printing, pathology and fire resistant pajamas that can spontaneously burst into flames
