Walk the Plank!

Given the ever deteriorating state of affairs, i really should be mugging, but my mind keeps wandering.

Suppose you and your friend are on a boating trip, when you both chance upon a vast, buried treasure. However, you do not have the equipment to recover everything, so you decide to head back to mainland to get it, and then return for the gold. In his excitement, your friend trips and falls into the shark infested waters. You reach for the nearest life buoy, but u recall that you are heavily in debt, and if you didnt have to share the treasure, you could wipe your slate clean, and then some. Now, what would you do?

1) Throw the lifesaver of course, I cant do that to a friend
2) Let God decide. Throw the lifesaver that I accidentally spilt blood on.
3) Watch Jaws V live, in surround sound. Friends are meant to be made use of, after all
4) Jump in like you saw on Baywatch. Be the hero!

I suppose, there would be people who choose any of the four. Obviously, everyone would want to make friends who behave like in option 1, but theres no way you can tell until it happens right?

There is a saying that adversity brings out the best and worst in people. I remember hearing this story of 3 escaped convicts in early Tasmania, when lost and starved, butchered one of their own and resorted to cannibalism. That certainly destroyed the view that new lords of the land were superior and more civilised than the aborigines.

Anyway, someone also said that one should learn from the mistakes of others, because it just beats having to learn from you own. But you never really learn, until it happens to you.
