We may tell ourselves or others that we subscribe to these values, or that we live by these codes. But how much of what you say do you believe, or even know? Truth is, until push comes to shove, we will never really know, for there is no substitute for the real thing.

i can see how looking inward instead of externalizing one's problems can lead to happiness, but too much of anything is never good, so on the extreme end of it, this leads to passiveness or even fatalism. so where do you draw the line?

No choice, lan lan gotta keep drawing the same line even if it gets obscured.That's what personal principles and codes of honour are for, they're little pieces of naivete and beliefs in black and white that we try to keep with us despite the realities of life, as a bulwark against the insanity that comes from staring too long into the greys of real life.
