There is a general rule that if you see an expert on television a lot, he or she probably isn't much of an expert - if nothing else, real experts are too busy doing research to be on that many shows. And the qualities that make for good TV are not closely related to those that make for good research. This observation is not unique to economics; for example, Stephen Hawking, whose A Brief History of Time was a best seller and who has been the subject of a number of adoring documentaries, is not the world's leading physicist.
