Despair. Delight-> Delirium

Water dripped from a tap. The ceiling fan creaked noisily, age and rust having taken its toll. Outside, dogs barked incessantly, interrupting the still humid night. All these was lost on the man, who worked feverishly at his desk.

Dishes lay crusting in the sink and the paint was peeling off the walls, but all these were secondary to his mission. "Almost there, almost there" He muttered to himself, redoubling his efforts. Perspiration poured off his body, soaking his sweat stained shirt, but he did not notice, only pausing briefly to clear his glasses. He smiled wryly to himself, "Soon, soon they will see. They think I have gone mad, but nay!"

He glanced up at the portrait on the wall, a reminder of his former self from eons past, during his inception, grinning proudly in the sun. (Ah, he had not seen Sol for three damn days.) His eyes then, were unmistakably shining with hope and confidence, that he would, change the world for the better. His eyes still gleamed now, but they were a tainted yellow.

At the beginning, he had been celebrated as an innovator, a pioneer, a hero. But as he progressed, the numbers in his camp dwindled, and soon he was forsaken. They did not understand, that sometimes, to go forward, they had to first go backward. He was certain that in this case, the ends justified his means.

His creation now, would result in the wanton slaughter of countless souls, but it would be for the better. Ultimately, they would learn, adapt, and come out stronger. How could they be so blind to see that he meant well?

"Yes, yes. Yes! This is it!" He was now scribbling furiously in a frenzy, half-standing in his excitement. "It is complete!" He cackled, rubbing his hands in glee.

"Let the mid term tests begin!"
