First of all, Gc isnt a term i like very much. So, if u give me Northern Lights or Golden Compass, I would choose the former at once.
Now considering the content (book vs movie), I would go for the former as well. (I dont dislike all movies that come from books, I loved LOTR!) Anyway, i felt that there was so much in the book that didnt come across in the show. I have no idea how Peter Jackson did it, but this time round, condensing an 8 hr story into a 2 hr show simply didnt do the book justice. Perhaps there were too many characters and twists, I dont know.
I just feel that how the Gyptians were portrayed didnt come off right. Their power, wit and craft werent really shown. Plus in the book, Farder Coram was the archetype of the wise old man,and again I just didnt feel it in the show. Or the bears, or the witches!....
Some things, imo, are better expressed in words. Like the pain when human and daemon are too far apart, the taboo of touching another person's daemon, or the revulsion when they see a 'severed child'.
To quote James Christopher of The Times, the "books weave a magic the film simply cannot match."
I also wonder why Christopher Lee always plays villains. Saruman, Count Dooku, and now some guy from the Magesterium. Then again, the show wasnt too bad. You cant go wrong with Nicole Kidman.
