i had been wanting to post on something like this but never found enough conviction to.. anyway many weeks ago ST did a wkend report of the growth of Buddhism in Singapore, citing that 43% of the population were Buddhist.
i found this statement to be remarkably misleading for several reasons. First and foremost, religion is always self-reported, which would lead to lots of inaccuracy, especially for this case. Of the 43%, how many are reported incorrectly, and of those that are reported correctly, how many are actually form Buddhists and how many are actually practising Buddhists?
i say this because many people declare themselves as Buddhists even though they are not. Perhaps they think once they have a statue of the Goddess/Bodhisattva Guan Yin at home then they are Buddhist. Perhaps they just write "Buddhist" under religion but do not practice at all..
there is one Buddhist at my workplace who is so prejudiced and biased against another , i feel quite alarmed (albeit relieved i am not on the receiving end) because he is also influencing others to feel the same way. and this person is so close minded and super duper emo that i feel disappointed that he isnt even trying to be objective. okay, i am not much better, but i least i make an effort and certainly dont go overboard like he is doing.
i realise this entire post might make me seem bigoted as well. well, its just tt i feel if you follow the teachings, you wont go around generating ill-will towards someone who isnt entirely deserving of it..(that, and that numbers cannot be trusted to tell the whole story)
