Hong Kong Policeman

Came across this title in the library, topic was interesting, as I have always been a fan of HK police dramas. Throw in an auto-biography of a "gwei-lo" heading off to the Far East and an interesting excerpt, and its time to hit the "borrow" button.

Proved to be a good choice, Chris Emmett, writes well. He describes the environment vividly and recounts his stories in quite some detail, but still keeping things concise, with a fair dose of humour.

What comes across is that Chris is also very humble and does not behave as some colonial overlord, instead always according credit and respect to his Chinese counterparts where due.

I was continually impressed by his ability to recount so many details, given that I have trouble remembering events from last year. Either he has an excellent memory or he definitely kept a diary.

It was like taking a tour of the police force circa the middle half of the 20th century - with Chris's tour of duty taking him from PTU to CID to Narcotics :)  The stories were also interesting, with many colourful characters to boot. Even though it has been an extremely busy week, i always took time to sneak a quick read.

Looking forward to book 2, if there is one.

Apparently, his daughter Jessica Emmett has also caught the "working overseas" bug, and is now stationed in Singapore :)
