1st time driving across the causeway, and we had an old 'Tap & Go' card, with the wife's colleague's card as a spare. Turns out the old card from 2015 is now invalid (though it only expires in 2022), and the wife left her colleague's card in another bag.
So we were stranded. Asked the customs officials whether we could buy another card, but were told there is no such service and we would have to borrow from other drivers. Thus my epic quest begun - think aside from Car 1, all were Singaporean registered cars.
Car 1: Malaysian driver lent his card but there was insufficient balance. He was not willing to lend his company card and asked me to move to the side so he could pass through, which was fair enough.
Car 2: Male with pregnant wife in the car. Was very cautious and only rolled down his window by 1.5cm. Said it was not convenient to lend us his card
Car 3: Male driver was ok to lend and asked whether I would return the card after use. Turns out there was insufficient balance in his card. Didn't seem surprised when told about it and didn't seem to care either. Probably had lent his spare card.
Car 4: Male driver waved his hand, basically saying - piss off
Car 5: Male driver looked ahead and pretended I wasn't there
Car 6: Female driver was helpful and explained that she wasn't sure if her card had enough balance for two cars but was willing to lend her spare. Card had sufficient balance and I returned her RM10 in cash.
Conclusion from small sample survey: Only 2 of 5 Singaporeans are willing to help a countryman in distress. Females more helpful than males.
